Three Nights. Three Conversations...
July's mid-summer sharpening
After three months away, college athletes will soon return to campus. There’s always a subtle, collective looseness in both language and habits. In the past, we addressed it by going on a 24-mile hike—no cell phones, just team, time, and distance.
One player, now an MLB outfielder, later called it one of the best days of his life. It was a chance to re-center and a reminder to put first things first. As the Fourth of July weekend comes to a close, I’d like to share something unique to help sharpen perspective before the return to school.
Athletes don’t always need another lesson, workout, or tournament. Sometimes framing what’s important — time, team and distance – does the most good. While baseball, school and technology are changing, the opportunities to continue learning outside the lines have lasting advantages. The vehicle is a great conversation.
Three Nights in July is a three-part webinar series featuring people I deeply respect, each bringing a different perspective on what it takes to thrive.
We’ve done this every summer to help students sharpen perspective midway through the break before school and sports ramp back up. This year, I hope parents will join us too.
Tuesday, July 8 – Danielle Martin
One of the top mental performance coaches in sport kicks things off with practical ways to build confidence, resilience, and consistency. Her intriguing new book on the topic – Martial Mentality: The Game Plan for Playing All-In from the Inside Out guides parents and players in making decisions simple and actionable.
July 15 – Jordyn Shapiro
The Founder & CEO of Just Start LA joins for a conversation about executive functioning, organization, habits, and the life skills students need to succeed in school and beyond. We’ll also explore how AI and modern learning tools can become an advantage when they’re used the right way.
July 22 – Leadership in the Professional World
Former Student-Athletes, Grant Cleghorn, Josh Palacios, and Matt French bring perspective on strategy, leadership, and building organizations that last. Insights from the business and financial world, along with Matt French’s take on human performance technology, AI, and where the future is headed. Together, they will discuss how families can prepare students not just for the next season, but for the next decade.
